my Breast Cancer blog

2004, age 34 — this is my story

Hair by cancer

First, my hair was blond. Then it was gone. It grew back dark and curly. Now it is less curly (but only entirely straight when I flat iron it). And it’s lighter (without the assistance of any chemicals), like it’s going back to its original color. Funny what cancer did to my hair. And how I like it better now than ever before.

  • What an awesome composite – it’s like a visual reference of how far you’ve come! I love the short dark hairstyle, by the way – you wear (wore) it well! :)

    Love, Jane

  • Just found your site. You amaze me. Your story of your friend Amy brought me to tears. I so wish I had a buddy to go through this with. It\’s funny I thought the other night that what my local cancer centre is missing is a way to match up parteners to go through this together. Women with similar back grounds. I am a mom to 4. I found my lump while breast feeding my last child. I have since had a dbl mast. & had my 1st chemo. Don\’t yet know if I will need rads too. I admire you. I pray you don\’t have skin cnacer. I will be thinking of you!

  • I’m just starting my chemo and yesterday was the first time I found hair falling out after shampooing. My question is, did the roots of your hair hurt when it started falling out? The top of my head to sore to the touch and that’s the only thing that I can think of that’s causing it.

I have been through the same thing, breast cancer, only did a double mastectomy….no reconstructive at this time. My hair was chestnut brown, no gray, and straight and right now it\’s really dark with silver throughout and CURLY! can\’t believe the curls…..you say you lost yours? all of them or just very loose or waves….?

You will do fine and skin cancer isn\’t a big thing unless it\’s a melanoma which my mom had 20 years ago. Just try to stay out of the sun (laying out in it)
You have a great deal of strength…the Lord was good to you.

  • My hair also was curly throughout my entire life, now it’s grown back with a slight wave, same color though, dark brown, almost black.

You will do just fine, stay strong.

Good luck and God bless you,
    Mary
