E.D. Hill to Have Preventative Double Mastectomy

Former Fox News anchor and conservative journalist E.D. Hill informed “The View” co-hosts today that she will have a preventative double mastectomy. Essentially,  she does not have breast cancer; she just doesn’t want to get it. And since a strong family history increases her chances of developing the disease, she’s taking action to keep herself as healthy as possible.

Seem too extreme to you? Or would you do it, too?

Hi Everyone, I went for my consult with the surgeon. I was very pleased with her positive answers to my questions and my concerns. The next step is to meet with the plastic surgeon and I plan to have this done the second week in August. I am scared to death, but this is something I have to do…for myself and my daughter…Val, my doctor also assured me that if for some reason cancer was to appear, it would be very early and it would be felt easily, for it would be right underneath the skin behind the nipple. I’m thinking of each and every one of you women as the days go by. I admire all of you and wish you all the very best..Please keep us informed..

Wow, I merely made a query on ED Hill’s name, to find out what happened to her; and found this astounding thread. After her stint on the O’Reilly show, and the subbing for him to find out this was an elective thing she did. She’s been married with a large family so she’s got to take precautions. Hope you’re well ED.

I had PDM on May 19, 2010. I am feeling great and have already started the reconstruction process. Tissues expanders were put in the day of surgery and filled with only 30cc’s of saline. At the 2 week date I went in for my first “pump up” with 100 cc’s. I can honestly say that making the decision to have the surgery was much harder that the surgery itself. The drains are probably the worst part. I had 2 removed after 7 days and the last 2 on day 9. The next day I had my first shower and felt so good. The tissue expanders are a bit uncomfortable and tight but not what i would call pain. I am so happy to have made the decision and have the worst behind me. I lost my mother to breast cancer one year ago. She was first diagnosed at the age of 57 and had a lumpectomy with chemo and raditation. 5 years later it came back in the same breast. She then had a mastectomy. About 2 years later it was back. Breast cancer matasicized to the bone. She had a great fight and lots of treatment. If I could turn back the clock I wish we had chosen a double mastectomy 15 years ago. My grandmother also had BC but did not die from it. Great Aunt had BC too. So for me it was family history and many mamograms, mris, biopsys, etc. that led me to my decision. My family and friends have been so loving, supportive and helpful. Now they keep fussing at me because I want to do too much. A good problem to have! Thank you ED Hill for sharing your story with us.

I am awaiting a date for preventative mastectomies, I am 33 and cancer free. My aunt was 38 when diagnosed and died aged 40. My sister was diagnosed at 25 and died at 29 and my mother was diagnosed last year aged 56 she has had both breasts removed , undergone chemo and the cancer has now spread to her brain and liver. I was wondering if anyone could give me feed back on surgery as I dont know what to do for the best. My surgeon has recomended tissue removal from my thighs which is fine as he said i will have slimmer legs! But not sure whether to have expanders instead? could anyone pass on any more information on this? Thanks Katie

I am considering having a PDM done within about 2 years. I am only 26 years old and married. I haven’t come across anyone on this board this young, did I miss anyone or did some people omit their age? Anyways, I had a visit with a breast surgeon today and it’s pretty scary. In the long run I think it will be the best decision. I tested positive for the BRCA-1 mutation and have a pretty strong family history of breast and ovarian cancer. My whole life I have wanted to have a “boob job” so having breast surgery itself doesn’t scare me. I have very small breasts. I want to wait until I have a second child to have this PDM. I would also do the reconstruction. For superficial reasons, can anyone with reconstruction share your experience with how “real” the nipples look? This is my main concern. Also, from the time of surgery one with mastectomy and the form inserts, how long did you have to wait until the second surgery with implants took place? I have not yet met with a plastic surgeon and haven’t seen photo’s other than some here and there online. Thanks for any input and God Bless you all, you are all very strong and brave!

I had a preventative double mastectomy 7 weeks ago and removal of my ovaries a month before. I am 52 years old. I tested positive for BRCA 2 in March (2010). My sister was diagnosed with breast cancer last year in April. She was 52 at the time. She had a mastectomy on one breast with no reconstruction. She had chemotherapy and radiation. She went for the BRCA test in February of this year and came back positive for BRCA 2. Her daughter who is 25 years old also was tested and came back positive, too. I went for the test hoping for the best but I was not shocked when it came back positive. After three years of callbacks from mammogram tests I had to take matters into my own hands. I never looked back. The healing from the surgery is slow but i’m getting better everyday. I agree that the drains were the worst part. Once they were out I felt better. I have the expanders in me and I am on my fourth saline injection. It is tight and sometimes I feel pain but it is bearable. My permanent implant (silicone) surgery will be sometime in Sept or Oct. What is getting me through this are my husband and my two boys and my faith. I can’t control whatever else happens in my body but at least I did this to try and prolong my life.
