Kidney Cancer: What Is It?

Kidney cancer, also called renal cancer, begins when abnormal cells in kidney tissue grow out of control and form a tumor. The most common adult kidney cancer type is renal cell carcinoma, often abbreviated as RCC.

What is kidney cancer?

Kidney cancer is a disease in which abnormal cells start growing uncontrollably in the kidney or renal pelvis. These cells may form a mass, also called a tumor.

Simple scientific definition

Kidney cancer develops when cells in kidney tissue acquire biological changes that allow abnormal growth, survival, invasion into nearby tissue and, in some cases, spread to distant organs.

Renal = kidney “Renal cancer” is another name for kidney cancer. “Renal cell carcinoma” usually refers to cancers that begin in the kidney tubules.

The kidneys filter blood, remove waste products and help form urine. Kidney cancer can start in different kidney structures, which is why several cancer types exist.

Types

Main types of kidney cancer

Kidney cancer includes several tumor types. In adults, renal cell carcinoma is the most common category, with multiple subtypes.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma

The most common RCC subtype. It is often studied in relation to VHL biology, hypoxia signaling, angiogenesis and tumor metabolism.

Papillary renal cell carcinoma

A renal cell carcinoma subtype with distinct microscopic and molecular features.

Chromophobe renal cell carcinoma

A less common RCC subtype with different cellular appearance and biological behavior.

Renal pelvis cancer

Cancer that starts in the kidney collecting area may be biologically closer to urothelial cancers than typical renal cell carcinoma.
